Kids Ship Diorama

2021

This environment piece was created for a local competition. I used several different pipelines depending on the prop. For the architectural pieces, I began with low poly modelling in 3ds Max and then imported the prop into ZBrush for detail sculpting.

For the organic props like the meteorites and dinosaur toy, I began by sculpting in ZBrush in high poly and then created the low poly in Maya. For simpler props like the books and planets, I modelled the low poly in Max. All the props except the blanket were built to be modular to allow for different configurations.

The props were unwrapped in Max, exported as an FBX, and then baked and textured in Substance Painter. Texture resolutions were kept under 1K. Smaller props were kept at either 128x128 or 256x256. Medium props were kept at or under 512x512. Larger props or props that took up the most screen time were exported at 1k.

Textures were condensed into a base colour map with opacity if needed, an ARM map, and a normal map. I created modular materials in Unreal 4 and used Unreal 4’s textile density and LOD setting to further optimize the props. The scene was rendered in Unreal Engine 4 with Unreal’s lighting, and I used its video sequencer to create the video.
